Long-haired harmonica man Garth Hewitt’s first LP ranges from pure folk to middle-ground rock, all with soulful female background vocals and small band accompaniment. Not quite as rootsy or heavy as his later albums, though ‘The Rock And Roll King’ is fairly slammin’ boogie. ‘Glory Glory’ jams pretty good also in a hand-clapping black gospel meets R&R style, while ‘The Lower Lights’ and ‘I Must See Jesus’ bring mild rock edges to what’s basically a traditional gospel hymn format. In fact there are healthy doses of gospel and jazz-influenced piano throughout the album. Overall more of an American heartland folk-rock vibe than anything British, with shades of The Band and early Mylon on cuts like ‘Let Them See The Light’ and ‘Good Old Man’. ‘The Caretaker’, ‘All Alone’ and ‘Brief Candle’ all check in on the quieter side. One of the earliest Myrrh UK releases. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
